MYP Personal Project

PErsonal Project pict

The IB MYP Personal Project is delivered as an asynchronous Schoology course. It is designed to be an independent inquiry into a personal interest, therefore the materials in Schoology are there to guide students through the process of planning, applying skills, and reflecting on the impact of the project.

Each student is assigned a licensed staff member supervisor whom they meet with four times over the first five months of school. A written report will be submitted at the end of February and assessed by their supervisor. The reports will then be sent to the IB and students will receive a certificate of completion in the fall of their junior year.

The first few weeks of school, or late in their freshman year, students choose a project and prepare a proposal to bring to their first supervisor meeting in October.

Folders 1 & 2 in Schoology guide students through setup and planning.

  • Folder 1: Introduction to the Personal Project - contains two informational videos. This is where students will find the timeline, Academic Honesty form, and assessment criteria.
  • Folder 2: Objective A: The Planning Stage - contains an informational video and process journal template to be completed as the student decides on a project, sets goals and success criteria, and creates an action plan for completing the project.

Folders 3 & 4 provide materials for applying skills and reflection.

  • Folder 3: Objective B: Applying Skills - contains an informational video and process journal template to be completed as the student reflects on the MYP Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills and determines which skills they will develop as they complete their projects.
  • Folder 4: Objective C: Reflection - contains an information video and process journal template to be completed as the student reflects on the impact the project has had on them and assesses how well they met their goals and success criteria.

Folder 5 contains examples of written reports as well as guidance for writing the paper

  • Folder 5: The Written Report - find examples of written report as well as guidance for writing the paper

Throughout Semester 1, advisory time is designated when teachers will be available to offer advice and answer questions. Students are also encouraged to seek guidance from parents, guardians and/or community members who may provide expert advice for their project. However, as mentioned above, this is an independent project where students are expected to spend about 25 hours on the process of inquiry, action and reflections.

We hope your student has a great experience with their project. We celebrate their work in the spring with a Personal Project fair when students prepare a brief presentation, bring their project and are available to the public to talk about their experience!
