Central’s Wrestlers

Coached by Wardell Warren and Mike Humphrey, Central’s wres-tling team has had an unfortunate start with an 0-4 conference record. This year there are two assistant coaches to help strengthen the young team’s weaknesses: Andy Brigger and Steve Yarnish.
“ It’s dif€cult to come out your €rst year, and automatically win matches,” said senior captain Ian Gacheru. The other captains include senior Sean Whatley and junior Johnset Xiong. Senior Kayode Ige and Sam Brewer are two of the key players this season. Although the boys’ aren’t very high in conference, they have high hopes for Highland Park and Harding.
At the Brooklyn Center Invitational, Gacheru, Whatley, Brewer, Jerome Robertson (12), and Trinity Lowe (9) continued on to the Championship round.
One problem the team has had trouble dealing with is holes within the weight classes. For example, Central doesn’t have a wrestler for the 14th weight class. “Central wrestlers are aggressive, but not enough students are interested in it,” said Gacheru.
The team lost to the Johnson Governors on Thur., Jan 19 with a score of 54-18.
As for opportunities of progressing to the state tournament, Gacheru has a great chance with a record of 20-4.
Their next meet is on Thur., Jan. 26 against Humboldt.
