The Anoka
Exchange!
Roosevelt Williams Sports Editor
On the 18th of January, students from Anoka High School came
to shadow Central students in Mr. Costello’s psychology
course. The exchange was through the Anoka exchange program
set to help students see the differences in the level of diversity
between a suburban school and an urban school. ‘’ There
is not much difference between the schools” said one
Anoka student. Days leading up to the Anoka exchange, a sign
up sheet was passed out in all of Mr. Costello psychology
classes for interested student to pair up with a student from
Anoka and be their escort for the day; also articles on Minnesota
plan to €ght illegal immigrants were given out in each class.
The €rst bus from Anoka pulled up in front of central around
9: 05 a.m. The students from Central were all ready waiting
in the cafeteria to greet them. After students were pair up
with their Anoka partners they went down to the computer room
to watch a live taping of the Central Morning News, “ their
broadcast (Central’s) is better than ours” said
Anoka student to her fellow schoolmate.
Every student with an Anoka student went to A lunch allowing
students from Anoka to associate with their friends as they
ate lunch.
After that they were to go down to the auditorium to have a
group discussion at around 11 AM. The topics discussed ranged
from class scheduling to immigration, to drugs to” should
we have Heath Start in school?” and the diversity between
suburban and urban school. “ You can count all the African
/American students at our school “ said an Anoka student.
The group discussion lasted for more than an hour and was positive
as each student had a chance to express their opinions freely.
“
I want to go to Central “ said a junior from Anoka. The
overall experience was positive for students from both high
schools. Central will be going to Anoka High School to shadow
their students within the next few weeks. |
