The Advanced Placement Program (AP) began at Central
in 1994. Juniors and seniors are eligible for AP courses.
There is no entrance requirement, although a pre-requisite
course may be necessary in preparation for the AP class.
The student must be academically ready and highly motivated
to engage in the rigors of the scope and depth of the APcourse.
Administered by the College Board, APcourses are standardized
nationally. Exams are administered each May and graded externally.
If students test well, college credits may be awarded by
most colleges in the United States and Canada. If you are
interested in the APcollege and university credit policies,
go to collegeboard.org for specific colleges.
APGRADES:
•All APExams are graded
on a 1-5 scale
•If you choose to report
AP grades obtained before your senior year, you will primarily
be telling the colleges that you undertook a difficult course
and that you are serious about your studies
•Overall, approximately
two-thirds of all AP test takers receive AP grades of at least
3. This grade is regarded as an indicator of an ability
to do successful work at most colleges.
•It is possible to repeat
an AP exam if you want a higher score
APEXAMS:
•AP Exams are given once
a year, in May; registration is in February
•Most of the exams take
two to three hours to complete
•For subjects that correspond
to half-year college courses, the exam is closer to two
hours in lenth
•AP Scholar, AP Honors,
and AP Scholar with Disctinction are additional awards that
may be earned by testing well in three or more exams
