Course Objective:

English 10 is a yearlong course in which students will develop, practice, and improve their skills in the areas of reading, writing, and oral presentation. Students will write a variety of formal and informal papers involving the study of concepts and themes we discuss in literature. The class is intended to develop skills in effective oral and written communication, analysis of fiction, drama, and poetry. Students will learn good habits in preparation for a lifetime of learning.

Animal Farm        Media Literacy

Materials:

3-ring binder (at least 1” thick), composition/journal book (at least 100 pages), two-pocket folder, and a pen or pencil.

Grading:

Papers/Projects: 40%
Journals/Daily Work: 30%
Tests/Quizzes: 20%
Participation: 10%

Journals:

You will be expected to keep and maintain a journal throughout the class.  I expect something substantial (at least 1 page) for each. Number pages and clearly label each entry with the title or the question and the date at the top.

Stay up on your entries, I will collect and read journals randomly without prior notice. There will be a file cabinet in the room for you to store your journals.

Late Assignment Policy:

All assignments are due at the beginning of class. Anything turned in after that will be considered late. Assignments will be accepted up to one week after the due date for half credit. Assignments will not be accepted after the one-week extension. You will not pass the course if you consistently turn work in late.

Participation/Attendance:

Your active daily participation in class is essential to your success in this class. Excessive absences/tardiness will result in a failing grade. This is non-negotiable. If you know you will be absent speak to me ahead of time to receive the assignments you will miss. You are responsible for all work missed while absent.

Class Atmosphere:

This class, like all classes at Central has a culture influenced by our diverse student population and the different values we may hold. Students also learn in different ways (visual, auditory, kinetic, tactile). This class will provide an atmosphere that is open and nonjudgmental. Points of view may be actively argued, but the speakers are to be respected as individuals working to enlarge their thinking about ideas and people.

Scholastic Dishonesty:

Students are responsible for maintaining scholastic honesty in their work at all times. Students will be responsible for adhering to the code of scholastic honesty outlined by Central High School. Scholastic dishonesty includes (but is not limited to) cheating on assignments or examinations, plagiarizing (misrepresenting as one’s own anything done by another), and submitting the same or substantially similar papers (or creative work) for more than one course without consent of all instructors concerned.

Expectations:

Everything in this syllabus is an expectation, but what is really important for this class is that you give your best effort. We may not want to be in class some times, we may struggle through texts or ideas this year, we will have our ups and downs, but I want you to know that I will give my best effort and that together we can succeed. It is not cliché to say that I believe in each of you and that you will grow not just as a person but also as a learner, thinker, and member of this class. In all that we ponder or read this year, find yourself. In all that we say or write this year, find yourself. Most importantly, in all that we believe or do this year, find yourself. Have a wonderful year!
