EXPO has many opportunities for parents and community members to be involved in children's school experiences! Please take a look at the events and classroom needs and sign up to help. Whether you can come once a week, once a month or for a special event, you will enrich the lives of children and help our staff to better serve the academic and social needs of all learners. You’ll have fun, be connected and meet wonderful new friends, too!
Skills Tutor - Help students with math, spelling, writing or reading in the classroom. Educators will direct and provide materials. This is usually a once a week commitment but can be worked out with each educator.
Field Trip Chaperone - Be available for some or all field trips. It is essential that we have enough adult supervision to ensure the safety of our students at all times. We particularly need parents who would be willing to attend field trips in classrooms other than those of their children.
Rocket Reader Program - Join a group of volunteers who go into first grade rooms to listen to students read. Volunteers sign up for one or two hours each week in this wonderful program for emerging readers! For more information check for updates in our electronic Friday Folder.
Art Adventures – Training is provided by the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Starting in the spring, parents bring a set of famous paintings into classrooms to help students become familiar with and appreciate great art through a discussion format. A culminating trip to the Art Institute takes place at the end of the season.
Destination Imagination - Parents help coach teams of students in a “problem solving” competition with the state competition in March. Teams meet weekly with a flexible schedule worked out between members and coaches. More detailed information is available from Darren Yerama or Mark Mueller at 651-290-8384.
Library Check-out/check-in – Assist in the library with check out and shelving of books, weekly or for a specific time (ie. Wednesday at 10:00-11:00 A.M.).
Treasure Island Playground Repair and Cleanup - Volunteers needed for one Saturday in the Spring to help with maintenance for our terrific playground.
Fall Carnival - Volunteer to help out at our annual October Fall Carnival. All kinds of jobs from ticket takers to cake bakers to “spooky creatures” are needed to make this a rousing success! EXPO’s Fabulous Book Fair - Volunteers are need to help set up and take down book displays and sell books and merchandise throughout the days during Fall/Spring conferences. (approximately 3 days). Flexible scheduling available.
EXPO All School Dance - Volunteers are needed for one evening in February to take tickets, help educators sell food or other items, set up tables and help clean up after the ball is over!
EXPO Silent Auction - March 18, 2017. An adult only event with games, items for bid and live auction. Join the committee or provide help with solicitation calls, donations, set-up and clean-up. Do you have something to donate - a talent or service, gift items or event tickets? Also consider hosting a Great Gathering. It is a fun-filled evening and all proceeds support enrichment at EXPO. EXPO Food/Culture Fair and Fun Run – Come help us celebrate the wonderful diversity of EXPO families, listen to our band and orchestra's Spring concert and get your exercise all in one evening on May 25, 2017! Volunteers are needed to sell food (for your own profit with a $10.00 table fee for EXPO), set up and clean up, help with water and numbers for the runners, and be “lookouts” on street corners to help with safety. *Any musicians who would be willing to help create a festive atmosphere would be more than appreciated!
Club's Choice - Volunteers are needed to help process order forms (check for accuracy, correct amount of money, etc.) and unload/distribute merchandise in early November.
Chili Festival - Coming up on Thursday, November 3, 2016! The Chili Festival raises money to repair and maintain our playground, Treasure Island. Bring your crock pot of chili and share your “secret family recipe” with the EXPO community! (We serve over 300 hungry people.) Set up and clean up help, soda/ milk/dessert table help are also needed.
Big G Box Tops for Education - Volunteers are needed to count, package and send box tops to General Mills. This can be done at home whenever it is convenient throughout the year. We need a new a coordinator and these jobs can be shared. Postage is reimbursed.
Grant Writing - If you have experience in writing and researching grants EXPO needs you! Please let us know if you have this expertise.
PTO - Join our EXPO PTO and be part of the ‘in-the-know crowd’! We meet the 1st Tuesday of each month from 6:00-7:00 in the cafeteria. Light supper is provided and child care is available with an RSVP. Learn more about the EXPO PTO at
School Pictures - Volunteers needed to help students prepare for pictures (hair combing, etc.) or to make sure students have an I.D. card and sometimes to go get classrooms or students whose scheduled time has changed. Any amount of hours will be appreciated!
Health Screening - Volunteers assist the school nurse in hearing and sight screening throughout several days in the fall. Schedules can be flexible. For more information call Jacqueline Pearl, school nurse, at 651-290-8384.
Volunteers assist staff in their day-to-day endeavors to provide the best possible educational program for all students. A volunteer can be many things: an extra pair of hands, an extra measure of personal warmth, a valuable special resource for classroom enrichment or bridge between the school and the community. We cannot buy what a volunteer can give to our schools and programs!
